About Bikram Yoga
Bikram Yoga is a challenging series of 26 yoga poses with two breathing exercises designed for all ages and levels of ability. This 90 minute class targets every muscle, joint, ligament, tendon and organ in the body. With a regular practice you will see the effects of this in your strength and flexibility. Bikram Yoga is done in a heated room to warm your muscles, prevent injury, allow a deeper workout, and cleanse the body by flushing toxins. A perfect compliment to your work-out, a great way to reduce stress, or to alleviate symptoms of long term or new injuries. Your practice is a life long commitment. Open your mind and heart to make profound changes in your life. Bikram says “Yoga is the only exercise in the world you can do at any age. There is always some posture that will improve your health, mind, and soul.”
Be patient with yourself. Yoga is a lifelong commitment. How quickly you progress will depend entirely on you and your natural ability to a small extent, but mostly upon the honest time and effort you give to the yoga. Here there is no comparison to those around you. It's a daily practice that is all about you, and your own progression from the point at which you began.
About Bikram Choudhury
Bikram Choudhury began learning Hatha Yoga poses in his native India, at the age of three. At five, he began studying with Bishnu Gosh (Paramahnsa Yogananda's brother) and quickly became a yoga champion. At age eleven he was the youngest contestant ever to win the National India Yoga Competition. At fourteen, Swami Shivananda declared him "Yoga Raj" (King of the Yogis). At age twenty, a weightlifting accident crippled Bikram. With the guidance of his guru, Bikram created his 26 posture series which restored his health.
Combining Eastern discipline and Western medicine, Bikram perfected his comprehensive system suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. Bikram arrived in the United States in 1973 at the invitation of President Nixon and the urging of Shirley Maclaine. He quickly became the foremost yoga teacher in the West as celebrities, athletes, and others began to flock to him. Since that time he has been healing thousands of students at his school in Beverly Hills and traveling the world extensively, bringing the benefits of Bikram Yoga to millions of students worldwide.
